Where Did The Idea of Birthstones Come From?
The history of birthstones supposedly started during during biblical times when the Breastplate of Aaron was created with twelve precious gems embedded to symbolize the twelve tribes of Israel (Exodus 28: 15-30). The gems eventually became associated with the twelve zodiac signs and finally, with each month of the year.
The gems themselves were bestowed with magical correspondences which were passed on to the wearer to enhance particular characteristics. For example, the diamond is a hard and durable stone with the capacity to last forever, thus it is the proper gem to symbolize the promise of marriage to last a lifetime.
Today, the beauty of birthstones is revered by many and we still like to believe that wearing such jewelry will somehow impart some positive meaning, even if only to improve our appearance.
There is more than one birthstones by month list in existence depending on the culture, but of course, any birthstone is fine to wear regardless if it matches one’s birth month or not.
