When the Claddagh ring is worn on the right hand with the heart pointing outward toward the finger tip, it means the person wearing the ring is available. While on the same hand if it is worn with the heart point facing the wrist, it symbolizes that the person is already in a committed relationship.

If the ring is worn on the ring finger of the left hand then it would mean the person is married or engaged. When the heart point is upwards it means the person is engaged and when it is downwards it signifies marriage.

This symbolism is quite interesting and it originated in Ireland when the Claddagh ring was passed down from generation to generation, bringing good fortune to the wearer. The young women who inherited the rings from their grandmother or mother were concerned that the bachelors understood what it meant when they wore the ring in a particular way, letting them know if they were available or not.
